This trike is a long wheelbase, semi-recumbent, rear steering delta. I have built five delta trikes so far. This one was number three and it is still my favorite one to ride. There are three main parts to the trike: the front power wheel Stepsthe main frame with seat Stepsthe rear steering wheels Stepsrigging 12 and the optional cargo rack Did you use this instructable in your classroom?

Add a Teacher Note to share how you incorporated it into your lesson. Front wheel drive has some advantages and some disadvantages. I like it because it is simpler than a rear wheel drive delta trike no differential is required and there is not a long chain run.

The two main disadvantages are that it loses traction going up hills because most of your weight is to the rear of the trike and that you probably will want to steer with the rear wheels.

Choose a rear fork that has a derailleur that can be remounted upside down. Start thinking of the old right side of the rear-facing fork as the new left side of the front-facing fork. Cut off the top tube and bottom tube right next to the bottom bracket shell.

This takes some getting used to. Your new trike will have a derailleur that faces upward rather than one that hangs down. The bottom loop of the chain is the power side and the top loop of chain with the derailleur is the slack side. Photo 2 shows a closeup of the inverted derailleur. The front end of the main frame will be welded to the bottom bracket shell BBS. It helps if you can "fish mouth" the main frame tubes curving cuts made so that the tubes wrap around the BBS and give increased surface area for welding.

Tack them in place and check the alignment. Tubing harvested from old bicycle frames is used to build the main trike frame. Two pieces of tubing are welded to the bottom bracket shell previous step. The rear part of the main frame is two tubes, one on top of the other. The completed lower part of the frame is 40" long.

At the rear the main tube makes a right angle turn upward Photo 4 and then is 23" tall. The upright tube is double for about half its height Photo 5. I have used two different kinds of fishing boat seats on this trike.

The first was a cushioned seat that was nice, but heavy and expensive Photo 1. Photo 3 shows the location of the seat attachment. Up close Photo 4 you can see that both seats were attached to 1" angle iron pieces welded to the main frame of the trike. The two pieces of angle iron that are at right angle to the main frame tubes were for the first cushy seat. The two pieces of angle iron that are joined and run along the long axis of the main frame were for the second lighter seat. The DeltaWolf Recumbent LowRacer Trike is a fun and fast ride that cheats the wind with a comfortable and aerodynamic seating position.

With full sized 26 inch rear wheels and 36 speeds, this trike is a real speed demon that can leave upright bikes in the dust. Placing the center of gravity very low, this recumbent racer can speed into corners without slowing down, and offers very responsive handling for city riding.

A Delta Trike has two wheels in the back, and one wheel up front. The DeltaWolf DIY Recumbent Trike places the rider between the rear wheels for a more compact and aerodynamic position, which reduces frame weight and offers an advantage in the wind. Every single step of the DIY Plan is shown in great detail, and the plans assume you have only the basic tools such as a hand drill, angle grinder, and any basic welder.

Most of the components required can be salvaged from old bicycles or purchased at a bike shop on a limited budget. Common square steel tube is used in the frame. Everything is shown in photos, so you don't have to have any previous bike building experience in order to build your own trike. On an upright bike, the most power you can deliver is by standing on the pedals, which only equals your body weight.

On a recumbent lowracer, you can press much more energy directly into the cranks, much like working out on a leg press. Add this efficient energy delivery system to the aerodynamic advantage, and you have a seriously fast trike that will put you ahead of the pack. Of course, recumbent seating is much more comfortable as well!

The square tube frame is easy to cut and weld using only an angle grinder and any basic welding unit. During the build, you can easily modify the frame to suit your own requirements, using the components you already have on hand.

Those who make the switch from upright to recumbent often wonder how they managed to ride any length of time on the small painful upright seats. Your entire body is seated in a natural and comfortable position on this trike, and you can enjoy the view without straining to hold up your head. Ride all day long, and with perfect handling, you can even have one hand free to grab some refreshments on that long commute.

To make this DIY Delta Trike adjust to riders of all sizes, the cranks can be moved to any position along the frame with this easy to adjust sliding bottom bracket.

Adjust the crank position in minutes to suit anyone using only a wrench. A simple modification to the pilot's steering system placed the handlebars under the seat instead of over your knees.

Although both steering positions are equally as comfortable, under seat steering makes it easier to experiment with a full or partial fairing. With a full fairing, you want to climb into the vehicle from the top, so under seat steering might be a better option for your experimental DIY Delta VeloMobile. Two wheels are the standard. Bikes may be the standard freedom-machine, the yard-stick by which all-else is measured. But Trikes have been around for as long as bikes. But, not so fast.
